And The Winner Of This Year’s Super Bowl Is… Twitter [STATS]

Yesterday we documented how Super Bowl XLVI had triggered a series of new tweets per second (TPS) records on Twitter, with the game itself peaking at a heady 12,233 TPS in the closing moments.

This was a huge jump from previous years, and it really illustrates the growth of Twitter as a platform, especially in the way it brings people together during live events. In 2008 the TPS peak during the Super Bowl registered at a humble 27, and last year’s 4,064 Super Bowl TPS, a record for any sporting event at the time, has been tripled just 12 months later.

All told, there were 13.7 million Super Bowl-related tweets sent between 6-11pm ET on Sunday. Twitter has documented this fact, and the leading hashtags used during the game, with a new update on their blog.

Software as a service firm Exact Target analyzed the Super Bowl activity on Twitter leading up to the game, noting that some 5,679,596 tweets – a number that is quite a bit short of Twitter’s game-only total – were sent from 46 countries in 23 different languages.

All in all, the Super Bowl, already a huge event in the ‘real world’, was absolutely enormous for Twitter in 2012. However, and amazingly, with the London Olympics, US presidential elections and Mayan apocalypse on everyone’s ‘must watch’ list later this year, there’s every chance that its impact will be eclipsed more than once in the months to come.
