USA Today, for the first time in its 34-year history, has taken a side in a presidential race. Well, sort of. In a scathing editorial, the paper certainly bashed Donald Trump. But it didn’t do much beyond that.
The USA Today piece called Trump “unfit for the presidency” and declared “he has demonstrated repeatedly that he lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty that America needs from its presidents.” The editorial then laid out the many reasons Trump is terrible. That’s great! We’re glad USA Today did that.
However, in the same editorial, USA Today said its board “does not have a consensus for a Clinton endorsement.” The paper explained that some board members “have serious reservations about Clinton’s sense of entitlement, her lack of candor and her extreme carelessness in handling classified information.” Entitlement? Clinton is entitled because she happened to marry an eventual president? OK…
Not only did the USA Today piece fail to actually endorse a candidate, it also advocated for a third party vote. That’s pretty ridiculous, considering voting for Johnson or submitting a write-in is a de facto vote for Trump, a person the paper just finished describing as “a dangerous demagogue.”
Congrats to USA Today for calling out Trump, something any person/paper with half a brain can do. We only wish the paper’s historic stance had a little more backbone.
