Vacation Auto-Responder Asks Emailers To Interrupt, But Only If It’s Really Urgent

flickr: kdperico

This is a great e-mail autoresponse, via Gizmodo, that strikes a balance between the relaxing, disconnected vacation we all dream we’ll have, and the oxymoronic “working vacation” we all end up with.

The email reads, in part:

I am currently out of the office on vacation.

I know I’m supposed to say that I’ll have limited access to email and won’t be able to respond until I return – but that’s not true. My blackberry will be with me and I can respond if I need to….

That said, I promised my wife that I am going to try to disconnect, get away and enjoy our vacation as much as possible…

• If your email truly is urgent and you need a response while I’m on vacation, please resend it to and I’ll try to respond to it promptly.
• If you think someone else at First Round Capital might be able to help you, feel free to email my assistant…and she’ll try to point you in the right direction.

Otherwise, I’ll respond when I return…

Warm regards,

We’ve discovered some Internet commenters (oh, darn them all!) who find this whole thing obnoxious, why the “I dare you to interrupt my vacation?” attitude at all? But we like it, because it means that if Josh really does need to be reached, there’s an emergency email contact available, and everyone else can get what they need done through the assistant.

This all depends, we suppose, on having the assistant in the first place…
