Venus Zine Relaunches

Independent, Chicago-based music magazine Venus Zine is relaunching under new ownership.

The magazine originally launched in 1995, in the Michigan State University dorm room of Amy Schroeder, who created the zine using little more than black and white photocopies and staples. In 2006, Shroeder sold a 95 percent stake in the magazine to the publishers of Chicago Agent magazine. In February of this year, former BearingPoint and VeriSign executive Sara Beardsley bought the magazine and hired Jill Russell, formerly associate editor of since-renamed Body+Soul, to become editor in chief.

Beardsley has big plans for the magazine, including boosting circulation threefold within two years. Part of the strategy for accomplishing this includes a partnership with Schecky’s Girls Night Out, a shopping event held around the country.
