Viral Video Law #6: Everyone Loves An Idiot

For some reason everyone seems to love watching other people screwing up ordinary, everyday tasks. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that FAIL videos have become extremely popular in recent years. Maybe it makes us feel good about ourselves to know there are other people out there who are even bigger idiots then ourselves, or maybe we just like to laugh at the misfortunes of others. Whatever the case, we can safely say that if you manage to capture a really good clip of someone making a fool of himself, or failing at a simple task, it has a good chance of going viral.

This week, one video in particular has been all the rage on YouTube. ‘Parallel Parking FAIL’, which has had over 1.1 million views in the last week, shows someone trying to parallel park. The space is pretty large, but for some reason it takes the driver about ten tries to get into the space, even with someone standing outside the car helping out. It’s one of those videos that will make you raise your eyebrows and ask, “What the heck is that person doing?” Not to mention, it should make you feel really good about your own parallel parking skills.

‘Parallel Parking FAIL’ was posted by failblog, the end all be all of FAIL videos on YouTube. Other recent failblog hits that feature idiots at work include Burglar FAIL, in which a burglar is caught on a security camera falling from a ladder six times while trying to escape from the scene of the crime, and ‘Addition FAIL’, in which a player on the game show ’21’ inadvertently gives her opponent a winning card because of an addition error.

Do you enjoy watching other people’s failures? What do you think is the appeal of watching idiots at work?
