Weekly Jobless Claims Drop As Long-Term Unemployed Ranks Swell

Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 6,000 to 439,000 last week, the Department of Labor reported today. This decrease brought the four-week average down to 447,250 claims a week.

States reported 5.9 million people claiming emergency unemployment compensation the week ended March 13, the extended benefits for the long-term unemployed who have exhausted their regular benefits. That’s an increase of 267,012 from the previous week and up from 2.2 million last year.
