There were over 28 million new reviews on Yelp over the course of 2019.
Yelp trend expert Tara Lewis said on food, “On Yelp, we’re seeing people appreciate international and Asian dishes and flavors, from ube (mentions up 10% in 2019 versus 2018) to Japanese souffle pancakes (156%) to exotic desserts like taiyaki ice cream (28%). Where last year, we saw healthy and mindful eating options like the Impossible Burger take center stage, this year, Yelpers are searching for vibrant, colorful dishes to put on their plates.”
Review mentions for hard kombucha soared 377% year-over-year, and other food trends that emerged included non-alcoholic bars, floral-infused food and drinks, Nashville hot chicken, cauliflower mashed potatoes and pizza, pineapple buns and Korean barbecue.
On beauty, Lewis wrote, “On Yelp, we’re seeing a focus on preventative anti-aging procedures like Clear + Brilliant laser treatments (mentions up 48% in 2019 compared with 2018), lymphatic drainage facial massages (36%) and stem cell beauty treatments (47%). Where this year, we saw microneedling and dermaplaning take center stage, next year, Yelpers will be searching for the latest technology to keep their skin bright, glowing and wrinkle-free. Mentions of dip powder nails shot up 67% year-over-year, and other beauty trends that emerged in 2019 included CBD, Botox alternatives, laser hair removal, Ombré Powder Brows, clean beauty chains and spray tans.
Finally, Lewis wrote on wellness, “At Yelp, we’re seeing that people are looking for new ways to take care of their bodies and minds. Looking ahead to 2020, we’re seeing Yelpers look for ways to minimize their downtime in all areas of their lives—from IV drip therapy (mentions up 44% in 2019 from 2018), rumored to reduce jetlag and hangovers, to Ject, a medical spa where getting in and out is as quick and easy as going for a wax.”
Other wellness trends that emerged this year included dance workouts, high-intensity interval workouts, hydrafacials, indoor cycling, holistic healing, big-box gyms and swimming workouts.
