Your iPhone Knows Where You Are

A story broke on Wired today about how the iOS devices are taking your location and storing it in a file. One reporter with Wired posted a screen shot showing everywhere his iPhone has been in the last year.

And this is news how exactly?

If you’ve ever used a smartphone then you’ve probably been asked if an app can use your location. That alone should have told you that you can be tracked. Do you realize how easy it is to write that data into a file? Seriously, it only takes one line of code.

And to be fair to Apple, it does make sense from the programmer’s POV to record the data. I can think of a bunch of things I’d want to do with it. On the other hand, the ethical dilemma of tracking customers apparently never crossed anyone’s mind at Apple; otherwise Apple wouldn’t be doing this.

Tracking someone, even if you have their permission, is an incredible invasion of piracy. But it is also pretty much what I expected out of Apple. This is the company that thinks it knows what you want better than you do. That paternalistic behavior is evident in all of Apple’s actions.

Folks, if you didn’t see this coming then your eyes were shut.
