As the Google-owned video site revealed during its Brandcast event at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in May, after Sept. 24, YouTube Originals will no longer be exclusive to YouTube Premiums subscribers.
Instead, YouTube Originals will be available to all YouTube viewers, free-of-charge, supported by revenue from ads.
YouTube Premium subscribers will be able to see the content ad-free.
Other benefits for YouTube Premium subscribers will include access to all available episodes in series upon their premieres, as well as subscriber-only content such as director’s cuts and extra scenes.
YouTube chief brand officer Robert Kyncl said in an interview with Adweek prior to the May Brandcast event, “One of the changes that we’ve gone through is to align our Originals with the way YouTube works, which is that everything is available free, and everything is available behind a paywall if there are certain features that you value in order to pay for a subscription. With Originals, we’ve gone from being focused on driving subscriptions to aligning with the core business.”
Premium subscribers will also start seeing a Recommended Downloads section under the Library tab, enabling them to browse and download videos suggested by the site’s algorithms.
