NEW YORK – December 5, 2013 – The deadline is nearing for the 60th annual Jesse H. Neal Awards Competition, run by American Business Media (ABM), a division of the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital content industries. In their 60th year, the Neal Awards recognize editorial excellence in business media and are the industry’s most esteemed awards. The 2014 Awards will involve an estimated 700 entries in 21 categories covering everything from outstanding blogs to exceptional editorial packages on a single topic.
This year’s awards will debut a new category, Best Media Brand (Overall Editorial Excellence), that will recognize a media brand’s overall excellence by evaluating its depth of offerings to readers in print, digital and event environments. This award, along with last year’s new categories, Best Subject-Related Package and Best Theme Issue of a Magazine, and other new categories from recent years, reflect the changing nature of b-to-b journalism as online technology continues to evolve.
In 1955, the first Neal Award was presented to Advertising Age for a series of articles. While the series of articles category still exists, the Neal Awards have gone through dramatic changes over the years to reflect the changing face of b-to-b publishing. The Awards were revamped in 2009, when a number of new categories – including Best Use of Social Media, Best Use of Mobile, and Best Webcast – were added to reflect the growing importance of digital communications. Changes that have been made over the last five years also make it clear that the awards are not just for traditional printed publications, but are open to blogs and online-only media. Previous Grand Neal Award winners include IEEE Spectrum, Architectural Record, Farm Journal, Heavy Duty Trucking, CSO, Baseline, CIO, Pharmaceutical Executive, RoadStar, and PC World.
ABM Managing Director Mike Marchesano said, “For 60 years, ABM’s Neal Awards have both recognized the best in the business, and reflected the changing face of b-to-b media. We decided to add the Best Media Brand category for the 2014 Neal Awards in order to recognize the outstanding brands successful at leveraging their b-to-b content across various platforms.”
“In an era where there is so much quick-fire, instant and, frankly, shallow journalism, the b-to-b arena is one of the increasingly rare areas where you really get insightful, expert journalism,” said Paul Maidment, principal and editor-in-chief of Bystander Media, in the video above. “The ability to spread that out to a wider audience is really important, and I think the Neal Awards is a very strong avenue to do just that.”
Award finalists will be announced in February, and all winners will be announced at the 60th Annual Neal Awards ceremony, to take place March 14, 2014 in New York City.
