30th Anniversary of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week Promises to ‘Shark & Awe’

The network will air over 19 hours of special programming

If there’s one thing that can unite people in trying times, it’s a shared love of something that is so much larger than any of us, something like Shark Week.

Discovery Channel is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the much-revered week in television programming, beginning July 22, by bringing viewers unprecedented access to exotic shark-infested locales, as well as partnerships with star-studded athletes and the Sharks from ABC’s hit show Shark Tank.

In the Shark Tank meets Shark Week matchup, human Sharks are paired with organizations aimed at rescuing sharks and their marine habitats, with one group ultimately walking away with a $50,000 prize. Shark Week will also feature a plethora of other harrowing programs, with over 19 hours of specials like Uncaged: Shark vs Ronda Rousey, Bear vs. Shark and Get Out Alive.

It’s not just about star power though; the network promises viewers some real groundbreaking scientific discoveries if they tune in, from the world’s most renowned scientists and institutions.

And off the screen, the network has already nabbed co-branding partnerships with the likes of Swedish Fish, which has spawned a mobile game, and lifestyle brand Vineyard Vines.
