AMC Networks Sets Post-Charlie Collier Leadership, Promoting Sarah Barnett and David Madden

Company restructure will result in around 40 layoffs

AMC Networks didn’t waste much time filling the void left by the departure of Charlie Collier, who left AMC and SundanceTV to run Fox Broadcast after the Disney merger.

The company will be consolidating its leadership, with new promotions for Sarah Barnett and David Madden that will give them oversight of AMC, BBC America, SundanceTV and IFC.

Barnett, currently president and gm of BBC America, has been named president, entertainment networks for the company. She’ll report to AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll.

Madden, who was president of programming for AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, will add programming oversight of BBC America and IFC, reporting to Barnett.

The company’s fifth network, WE tv, will continue to be managed by president and gm Marc Juris, who reports to Carroll.

Additionally, AMC and SundanceTV’s marketing chief Linda Schupack has been named president of marketing, entertainment networks, and will head up marketing for BBC America and WE tv.

As part of the restructuring, the company expects to lay off around 40 people.

“Sarah is an incredibly talented executive who has distinguished herself leading BBC America and, prior to that, SundanceTV, to new heights with acclaimed shows that have redefined each brand,” said Carroll in a statement.

“She stands out for being an inspired thinker and innovator who brings a deep knowledge of the business, strong creative instincts and excellent leadership skills to this new role, and she’s well-positioned to make even more significant contributions to our success as we strategically shift to an enterprise-wide structure across our scripted entertainment networks.”

Carroll added that Madden is “is as good as it gets when it comes to making compelling content people care about.”

Two weeks ago, Collier, who served as president and gm of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, was tapped to run Fox Broadcasting after the Disney deal is completed. He’ll be Fox’s CEO of Entertainment.

Collier had joined AMC as gm in 2006 and was promoted to president in 2008; he was given oversight of SundanceTV post in 2015. Under his watch, AMC blossomed into a scripted TV heavyweight, thanks to Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, which continues to be one of TV’s most-watched shows among adults 18-49.

“This new management structure will enable us to better operate and leverage the strength of our entertainment networks as we continue to position the company to take advantage of new opportunities,” said chief transformation officer Jennifer Caserta.

As part of the new structure, executive director Blake Callaway will continue to oversee IFC, while executive director Jan Diedrichsen will still head up SundanceTV and the Sundance Now streaming service.

Courtney Thomasma has been promoted to executive director, overseeing BBC America.

Barnett ran SundanceTV prior to BBC America, while Madden arrived at AMC Networks a year ago after working as president of programming for Fox, the same network that Collier will now run.
