The latest InStyle cover subjects are a little furrier, brighter and sillier than what we’re used to seeing—but they all still look fabulous and fashion-forward.
The magazine created five digital covers featuring Sesame Street characters Abby Cadabby, Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Elmo, all wearing designer outfits in honor of the show’s 50th anniversary.
“I would argue, empirically, that Sesame Street is the best thing in the world. I originally worked with them a decade ago, but on the occasion of their 50th birthday, there was no better time to ‘InStyle’ them up,” Laura Brown, editor in chief of the Meredith-owned InStyle, said in a statement.
The covers were released today, along with a video showing the characters getting invited to a party where they had specific instructions to dress their best in honor of the show’s anniversary.
Naturally, the fuzzy crew called Brown for advice, and they traveled to Meredith headquarters, where they got a tour of the offices and explored the InStyle fashion closet.
“It’s called fashion—look it up,” Big Bird says in the video.
After getting fancy in clothes from designers that included Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mizrahi, Brown reminded the characters that the show’s anniversary wasn’t until November.
After Abby got upset that she had gotten all dolled up for nothing, Brown aptly replied, “You never get dressed up for nothing,” and took them to a photo shoot.
“[T]he people who work at Sesame are wonderful and at the top of their game,” Brown said. “It was a privilege to work with them and my office may never recover from the joy.”
