Netflix Trolls Kevin Spacey in Trailer for House of Cards’ Final Season

‘The reign of the middle-aged white man is over’

Netflix released a trailer today for House of Cards’ sixth and final season, which makes clear that the drama is distancing itself from its disgraced former star, Kevin Spacey.

Production on Season 6 was suspended last November in light of sexual harassment allegations against Spacey, who starred as President Frank Underwood. Actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed last October that Spacey made a sexual advance toward him when he was 14.

Soon after, eight current and past House of Cards staffers told CNN that Spacey had engaged in a pattern of sexual harassment, leading to a “toxic” work environment.

In December, Netflix committed to an eight-episode final season of the series, without Spacey, that would focus on Robin Wright who plays Spacey’s wife, Claire Underwood.

The new trailer for Season 6, which debuts Nov. 2, shows that Claire has now become president herself, and has had a “difficult” first 100 days in the job. The new footage also seems to be trolling Spacey and the behavior that got him fired from the show.

Early in the trailer, Wright’s Claire says, “Here’s the thing: what Francis told you the last five years, don’t believe a word of it.” She later adds, “It’s going to be different for you and me.”

At another point, an unseen character declares, “The reign of the middle-aged white man is over.”

The House of Cards trailer, which includes footage of new cast members Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear, also features the show’s Season 6 slogan: “The end is here.”

“We’re excited to bring closure to the show for fans,” Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix, said in December, adding that the decision to continue House of Cards without Spacey also allowed the 370 people on the show’s crew to keep their jobs. “We’re very excited we were able to come to a good creative conclusion.”
