In the spot above, Quist downgrades his opponent as a “millionaire from New Jersey” (the tag previously has been “billionaire”) and takes a bullseye shot across some open space at a TV set displaying one of Gianforte’s paid spots. It gets louder. Per guns.com, Gianforte wasted no time firing back at Quist, literally, with an exploding-screen ad of his own. The twist, cleverly, is that Gianforte blows up one of his own ads as well.
Both ads hit the internet airwaves April 20. Quist’s is the more successful of the two spots in terms of evoking something like a Clint Eastwood movie feel, but only time will tell who racks up the most YouTube views. The Montana special election for the at-large congressional district seat will take place May 25. The third candidate for the long Republican-held perch is Libertarian Mark L. Wicks, an Inverness cattle rancher and author of the book Wrath of the Dodo.
