Elena Delle Donne is a stud on the hardwood. She was the 2015 WNBA MVP, and the 2013 WNBA Rookie of the Year, earning these accolades as a member the Chicago Sky. Now, for the first time, she is part of a loaded U.S. Olympic women's basketball team roster, which includes veteran Olympians Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore, and first-timers Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart. The U.S. women are in the midst of an extraordinary winning streak—now 47 in the Olympics as they pursue a sixth consecutive gold medal. They play France tonight in the Olympic semifinal.
These days, the native Delawarean seems to be grabbing more attention for her off-court life, particularly her sexuality. Delle Donne recently disclosed her relationship with Amanda Clifton in an Aug. 4 story in Vogue, remarking that the two have been engaged since June 2.
"It was just one of those articles where they came into my home, spent a couple days with me, and Amanda is a huge part of my life," Delle Donne recently told ESPN from Brazil. "So to leave her out wouldn't have made any sense."
"It's not a coming out article or anything," she said. "I've been with her for a very long time now, and people who are close to me know that, and that's that."
Delle Donne is now at least the third member of the U.S. Olympic women's team to announce her same-sex marriage. In May 2015, center Brittney Griner married fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson (though Griner filed for divorce less than a month later). Two months earlier, Seimone Augustus married actress LaTaya Varner.
"The week has been normal," Delle Donne said. "Nothing crazy. Obviously a couple of people wanting to talk about it here and there. A lot of support. It's been really nothing too crazy, which is great. That's where I hope our society moves to, where it's not a story. It's normal."
"I would love to see that (sort of support in the NBA), if there are any (gay men). No one should have to hide who they are."
